Sascha "Yiska" Heinisch has reported for Upcomer that a 2-2-2 role lock will become a part of the Overwatch League in Stage 4.
According to the report, the Overwatch League was notified of the change in early June. Stage 4 begins July 25. Yiska reported the date for the change was delayed several times.
A 2-2-2 role lock would restrict teams to playing with two DPS heroes, two tanks and two supports. Such a change would prevent teams from running the GOATs composition, which utilizes three supports and three tanks. The change would also prevent teams from running triple DPS compositions that have also become increasingly popular throughout the season.
GOATs has been the dominant meta of the 2019 Overwatch League season. Last season, dive variants dominated the Overwatch League metagame for most of the season until several major balance changes and the introduction of Brigitte led to the gradual shift to bunker-style compositions in Stage 4 and the playoffs.
Back in 2016, Blizzard implemented their first major change to the way teams created their compositions. There was no hero limit at Overwatch's launch and teams were able to put multiple players on the same hero as a result. Several tournaments implemented a hero limit of one before Blizzard made the change themselves.
At the time of publication, Blizzard had not yet responded to request for comment. This article will be updated with their official comment should Blizzard make one.
