Blizzard Entertainment revealed Overwatch 2, the sequel to Overwatch, at BlizzCon 2019.
Overwatch 2 will continue to feature 6v6 multiplayer, and features a new gamemode called Push, where teams push a robot from the middle of a map to the enemy’s side, and the one that pushes the robot the furthest wins. Push will be played in quickplay, competitive and the Overwatch League. The website also lists new maps including Toronto, Gothenburg, and Monte Carlo.
Game Director Jeff Kaplan said the Overwatch League will play Overwatch 2, although he did not specify when the switch to the new game will be made. Every hero from Overwatch will be playable in Overwatch 2.
Players that move to Overwatch 2 can carry over accomplishments and items such as skins and emotes from the original game into the sequel. Players from the original Overwatch will also be able to play with Overwatch 2 players in multiplayer, as well as with the new heroes and maps.
There will also be new co-op content where players can play in PvE modes, which includes Story Missions, where four players can play together in co-op missions, and Hero Missions, which was described as “highly replayable cooperative experience," where players can level up heroes and customize their abilities.
Kaplan stated there will be engine upgrades in Overwatch 2, although he did not specify whether this will come with an updated engine or an entirely new one. Additionally, graphical changes will be made--as seen in appearance overhauls to individual heroes.
A release date for Overwatch 2 has not been announced yet.
