The announcement comes several weeks after Yiska of Upcomer reported the 2-2-2 role lock was on its way in Stage 4.
The change will eliminate the usage of GOATs, a composition that relies on three tanks and three supports. The change also eliminates the triple DPS and quadruple DPS compositions that were used more often in Stage 3.
The change will coincide with a balance patch. In the game's latest PTR update, Brigitte was changed the most of any character. Brigitte has been used in few compositions with just two supports in the past.
Blizzard has also announced its Stage 4 map pool and a 1-vs-1 duel series during Stage 4. Participants in the duel series have yet to be announced.
The role lock will also be implemented into Contenders 2019 Season 2's playoffs, according to a tweet from Overwatch's Path to Pro.
UPDATE: This story has been updated to reflect when the change will affect Contenders.
