If I understand the rules:
If C9 wins, they qualify for top8, otherwise it looks like AF Blue will make 2nd in the group according to the tiebreaker rules, either by map score (if C9 lose by worse than 2-3) or by head-to-head (if C9 lose by 2-3).
If C9 win with 3-0, they take first in the group, otherwise they will be 2nd after Kongdoo.

I agree, saying that they couldn't "affect" the rankings was too strong. Nonetheless it will be hard to say that some teams deserve a spot in the rankings over others if they don't play each other. I guess that's what makes it interesting!

The only other articles on Overwatch on that site by one of the authors are World Cup articles and articles on Sombra, Tracer and the game which are basically copy-pasted from Blizzard news releases; the other one has covered most of the recent major tournaments, so should really know better.
