As mentioned above, you could also say that Seoul was just consistently a bit better than Dallas overall. Both sides had...questionable plays, but it felt like Seoul was the superior team when you look at individual plays and set-plays execution, more so than Dallas "underperforming", imo.
But then again I am a self admitted Seoul Dynasty fanboi so I'm biased.
We also need to take into account the time that games will be played. It'll either suck for KR, EU or both. The Seoul vs Dallas match was in the afternoon for Korea (school?) and very early morning for EU, probably limiting viewership from those regions.
What they would consider as successful still remains to be seen. Not really something we can quantify, even though just using numbers is very tempting.
Quick rankings before the season officially begins, using tiers to illustrate which teams I think will fight for positions vs the ones that might be weaker. Actual positions are somewhat interchangeable within tiers...GO:
Top Tier (A)
Playoff Contention Fight (B)
Probably Weaker (C)
Notes:
New York could be a question mark with Houston possibly edging them out if they turn out not being able to properly use SBB, Pine and Libero but I think they're a top 4 team overall. The other three teams are somewhat interchangeable with my personal bias going towards Seoul being at the top.
I didn't put Philly in the "weaker" tier because even though they haven't played their roster looks like it has potential and could fight for a top 6. I do think Houston is possibly the stronger teams in this tier and they could very well overtake the top 4 but I also feel like that would require them consistently over-performing..aka being better than I think they currently are
Without factoring in possible mid season changes I don't think the bottom three stand much of a chance of making the playoffs but I'm preparing myself for some surprise buttseks in case they hit it out of the park.
It's about to get real ladies and gents, really looking forward to seeing what these guys can do on this grand of a scale.
More than likely. AFAIK OWL teams that have endemic brands can use that brand in Contenders, but don't quote me on that.
Wages ARE a problem for Korean players. Not sure if you remember this but it's been said multiple times that outside of LH players were getting on par or lower than some part time jobs. Even the KDP or more famously, the LW players.
I'm not defending boosting, specially in Korea where, in some cases, can be considered illegal but your example shows some level of ignorance being used as a statement.
Have at it in the Reddit thread, it's pretty hilarious.
Jeebus. I hope they get the views they need to make return on investment for that.
CamRa was nice enough to get the shit talking kicked off, go and have some fun if you care to!

Tomorrow evening? Oh it's on. HYYYyyyyYYYPPe!!!!!!
Indeed, OPC was just a no brainer for them considering the bigger prize pool and the low level of competition it had, relative to the team itself. Evidently with the new prize format it no longer makes sense for them to compete there so at last we get to see how they actually compare in a much stronger region.
It forcibly is a new deal given the exclusivity of OWL and how different the rules around it's broadcast are. Also, we are in January and even though the deal might have been finalized earlier...the announcement still makes it new.
Happy to see most of the gang but I really do hope to see ZP, JKap, Left Guy and Jamerson casting official Blizzard Overwatch content with them possibly getting some OWL action in Season 2.
I'd love nothing more than to see all the people that helped 1. bring competitive OW to a large audience and 2. kept it alive and well when support was almost non existent.
Oh hey! He did the YouTube thing:
Let's break it down! Nullifying advantages by baiting
Mostly because it looks like he's going to be more of a role player instead of a hard carry play maker and I see nothing wrong with that.
Just means less of a spotlight on him.
As long as Winston is the most used Tank Ana is going to continue being weaker than Zen imo. Barriers really hurt her so if Mercy isn't a must pick I see Lucio/Zen being the pair that gets used the most with some variation depending on what situation teams are facing.
The absolute top tier Ana players that can make good use of her might decide to go with her but I think orb/speed is more likely to come back.
They just added 6 more players:

No Hidan, FeelsBadMan. Also curious about them having 12 players since Contenders doesn't allow that many IIRC.
Unplayable is most likely a stretch. She still has rez, it's still the most powerful non ult ability in the game. She's still as hard to kill in Valk but now at least she wont swing fights as much when she ults.
I don't see her pick rate falling like Lucio's did. she's still by far the easiest support to get value out of, and rez is no weaker than it was before. Really need to see how this plays out before we start yelling bloody murder.
P.S.: Overbuff tweet showing an example of Mercy clearly not dying after the first round of nerfs:
https://twitter.com/Overbuff/status/949079082121224193
I'm not convinced that these ones will do her in either.
Valk was nerfed, but Rez is still as strong as it was. At worst we get more options, otherwise she'll still continue to get picked, just less.
I assume that she'll remain a really strong option on payload/hybrid defense and Assault point A defense. There's just going to be more opportunities for counter play, otherwise I'm pretty confident that she won't be "unusable" for the vast majority of the player base.
Until they remove rez it's still going to be an ability that requires you to outplay it more than her to outplay you, imo.
I tested on the PTR so if anyone hasn't seen these already...

I don't play either of these Heroes so I'm 500% biased when I say that I like the changes.

I suspect many people will have a knee jerk reaction to these as is usual for popular heroes, but i'm hoping it helps make some heroes less mandatory and bring others back in line.
Do note that even though you know it went to 5 maps, it still doesn't tell you who won, so the information you do get doesn't reveal critical information imo.
If you're on the actual match page you're likely to get spoiled by the comments, possibly moreso than the number of maps.
I think the argument of "he got it so I want it too" is flawed in this case. I believe they limited the change to Diamond and above because those ranks hold a relatively small part of the community and a change like this most likely needs some time to be properly evaluated.
It's not something you can really gauge through internal testing. Now, I don't know if the plan is to bring this to all the ranks, but the current sample size is a good one for what could be a pilot experiment. The PTR is a very poor place to test this type of change since an extremely small number of players participate and matches are not taken seriously.
Gigantti, I'm looking forward to seeing what they can do with Zappis/Davin and the new additions they make.
I'm curious to see how this turns out. Now, I don't have the expertise to accurately comment on the effects of this change, and I assume you don't either, but like you I'm very worried.
No matter how ignorant we are I can't see this looking good for smaller community tournaments, or Overwatch as a whole. Hopefully we're wrong here but man...I really don't like the looks of this.

NYXL | ORIGINS - SAEBYEOLBE
SBB's intro video showing another side of him. I already liked him cause he looked like such a chill dude but man, this makes him extremely hard to dislike for me, and I didn't even root for NYXL.
Also, just like Runner, his wife is unbelievably pretty, bit sad that they have to be separated by such a distance!
GGs to the NYXL production team on this one for sure.
Probably a question of logistics, but yeah.
It sounds like a logistical nightmare but would make hella sense in ranking teams/player for OWL management to evaluate.
He's also going to be one hell of a beast in this Mercy meta being one of the best imo.
AFAIK AKM is still in NA, I don't think he was ever on the table for this. Also, if Hqrdest was to be part of this I'd probably keep Nico over Kryw, or just have all three of them on for added flexibility.
If he was going in to win then sure, but obviously no fucks were given about victory with the team he built, so I don't think it'll even register.
I love Canada, I'm Canadian, but I gotta say, the USA vs Korea match was much closer than the Canada vs Korea even though the boyz did an amazing job and overachieved according to pretty much everyone.
I'd say skill wise he's up there, now is that worth the inherent risk he brings with his periodic volatility? That I'm not sure. I used to really dislike the guy and for a while he had settled down but "recent" events just brought me back to my original opinion.
More than anything I think the players need help coping with the added dynamics of being an OWL player and the standards they'll expected to uphold. Probably not an easy thing for a bunch of kids that play video games at the highest level, but obviously necessary.
Well shit! The boiz pulled off the ultimate anime battle sequence...AND WON!!!
The eastern teams don't mess around with rule breaking, even if they easily could have gotten away with it and no one would have known.
Sucks for the coach though. He caught it, stopped it, reported it, and got penalized for not being proactive enough? Mind readers needed.
Updated the roster for Tyrodin -> Fasffy
Also, I don't think I'll be able to watch these guys get destroyed by Pro teams. Not even for the Kephrii luls...FeelsBatMan.
When KDP be winning games without Void or Wakawaka, strong looking team rn.
Agreed. I'm an out of the closet weeb so I'm really hoping Japan is able to create at least one team that can really compete at the world stage. even better would be an OWL caliber team to allow the country to come out of the shadow of it's huge fighting game culture.
Yeah, it sounds like their team was already mostly finalized during LGD's dominance. Would have loved to see most of the MY roster along with Undead and a few other players at the top of their game to form a 10 ish man roster. Hopefully they make some mid season additions.
That and I'm also looking forward to seeing if Eileen will still be as strong as he was next OWL season so he also gets him chance to play for the Dragons.
Considering how Sayaplayer's been rumored to have refused all OWL offers I'm not sure he should be included in this squad.
PS: Did you really treat them 'STD' ? xD
Did you really "call" them 'STD'
Blizzard is officially removing performance based SR for Diamond+ among other changes.

Covering your bases, genius.
The greatest of greats has spoken.

This is where Shanghai having had proper time to prepare could have been a very different story. I also think they would have greatly benefited from having a player like Eileen to complement the great hitscan play we saw today. Hopefully they reconsider and retool during the mid season since MY will no longer be a thing and their players will also be very viable options.
