GG Esports Academy, while a separate organization from OpTic, is still under the Infinite Esports and Entertainment umbrella. GGEA will therefore continue to operate as the academy team for the Houston Outlaws, just like OpTic Academy before it.

The team plays their first match of Contenders Season 2 July 3 against Last Night's Leftovers.

I am extremely curious as to the reasoning behind this... Is it legal name licensing issue or is it a marketing thing?

name thing wouldnt matter, optics parent company owns the OWL spot

remember that blizzard didnt want the OWL to benefit the teams original branding, so they had to make new team names that didnt involve there original name. so that probably includes your academy teams.. since in traditional sports your farm team is generally named something else.

As others I'm wondering why, I really see no reason to distance itself further from their Optic brand, it's a good one.
Maybe they want to keep it completely separated, at least on the marketing side, from the other esports??

My thoughts are similar. Maybe keep the OpTic name out of Overwatch because if they can't have it branded on their OWL, why confuse it all by giving it to their academy team? Perhaps they are afraid being only to brand the academy team reflects poorly. Also it might just be a convenient chance for OpTic to start putting the name of another subsidiary (GGEA) out there.

I think the whole point is to have all of Optic's "development" teams under this umbrella. They have GGEA teams in pretty much every eSport they are involved in.
