Here’s my take on the matter.
If I take my dog and take a photo of him, it’s fine and probably cute.
If I dress him in a KKK outfit and hang a sign on his neck saying “lynch all the n****rs” that’s not ok and should be addressed.
Does it mean my dog was in the wrong? No. Not at all. Not his fault he has a bigot owner.
Does it mean I was in the wrong? Absofuckinglutely.
So when I take my dog out on a walk, and people start calling my dog racist while ignoring me, is that unfair? Totally.
The user should be to blame. Any medium can be turned hateful, propagandized, or used for ulterior purposes. Doesn’t mean the medium should be wiped out. The people abusing it should be called out.
Yeah I agree with that first sentence Bag, CamRa could do with being taught logic and reasoning.
In your analogy you're comparing the Pepe meme with the dog. The Pepe meme isn't the dog though, it's equivalent to the KKK outfit. The Pepe meme has been linked as a symbol to the far right and fascism which is where this whole removal situation is stemming from. By your logic the KKK outfit and offensive sign shouldn't be destroyed because it's not the medium that's racist, it's the person themselves. I hope we can all agree that the outfit and sign should be destroyed.
Just to add to this the dog is more like twitch chat, twitter or a players stream etc. The guy used the dog to put up his symbol of hate, much like a user would use Twitter to post a Pepe meme (a symbol for the far right).
Like I said in post #21, it's kinda dumb that Blizzard are doing this because the connection is so weak but your analogy is kinda dumb too lol
They came to power in the wake of Germanys defeat in world war one (battlefield one). While simutaneously making major breakthroughs in agriculture and military tech that they wanted to use and facing overbearing economic sanctions. I doubt you can compare that society to our pussy as* internet tweeting pepe nazis in our pussy a** pc culture we have today. Only reason this brings us closer to nazi germany is because the news wants to make the most idiotic stories about this drama because pussies like you eat it up.
Is the idea that the Overwatch community should be a welcoming, family friendly place so awful to everyone? Is it really so despicable that Blizzard want to cut out every form of hateful, offensive behaviour they can find?
I agree, removing Pepe is kinda dumb but you can understand their reasoning. Whether you like it or not the meme does have a connection to the far right and fascism, with Hillary Clinton even releasing an article about it during the presidential election. Yeah it isn't used in that context probably 99% of the time but it still has toxic links.
If we are going to have a nice community filled with an atmosphere of joy, fun and friendliness then the offensive material absolutely 100% has to go. This includes the fringe cases like this where it's not really all that bad, but it's best to get rid of anyway. "But muh free speech!!" I (hopefully never) hear you cry - they're not stopping you from putting it on twitter, your personal discord servers or forums like these. I'll finish on a question like I started: Would it really be so bad if there was a space where everybody loved each other and the only drama was related to what happens in game/on stage?
