so seagull joined envy
(lets get some downvotes) i dont think seagull has what it takes to be in owl but envy is lacking genji so maybe good move but for sure a good move in terms of teams popularity
but for nearly every other hero envy has a better player
soldier - taimou, harry
mccree - taimou, effect
widow - taimou
tracer - effect
doomfist - effect
junkrat (kappa) - taimou
so if not genji then maybe hanzo and pharra? but taimou and effect are both good on these and im nearly sure have better teamwork (play longer with the rest of players)
We'll obviously have to wait and see how things shake out, but I would imagine that any situations calling for a Pharrah, Junkrat, Zarya, Genji, or Hanzo would be a good situation to put in the bird.
Seagull seems to think that this patch is not conducive to Genji at the moment (based on comments he made yesterday), so presumably he has been playing one or more of these other heroes in scrims.
Given the sizable salary Envy must presumably paying him, I just don't see them picking Seagull up just to keep him on the bench all the time.
his popularity is never implied in that tweet? hastro literally says they plan on using seagull in strategies on a PER MAP BASIS. envyus never seemed like a team that cared about popularity. if you look at kyky/chips/taimou/effect or any of the players, they're never one to put status first, teamplay second. this isn't a popularity contest.
edit: to add on to that, they signed mickie and effect, both foreign players that were super lowkey/not well known. they signed those two for their skills and their ability to work in the team.
i doubt the popularity was "a big factor." taimou is one of the most prolific players in the scene, and team envyus alone has been the most successful team since the inception of competitive overwatch. they don't need more big viewer numbers to succeed any more than they already are. sure it's an added bonus to tack on an enormous fanbase, but they could've done that with or without the bird. if you listen to kyky on dogman's recent podcast you can get a better perspective of how the team as a whole is thinking. not a lot of it really relates or points to a "popularity/fanbase" attitude. they likely understand that the fanbase is a bonus/byproduct of success.

here it acrualy wasnt posted when i created this thread but seagull changed his description on twittwer before envy tweeted announcment
i haven't been watching seagull's streams as of late but it doesn't take much to realize that seagull is an incredibly gifted player. i'm ecstatic about the move to nV. i have no doubt in my mind that seagull is 100% OWL worthy. his game sense is off the charts, his versatility/flexibility is valuable, and his positive attitude makes him a fantastic team player. i imagine he would be a JOY to play with on any team. just because he hasn't played a pro match in a streamed tournament doesn't mean he hasn't been offline scrimming or training or practicing with other teams in custom games. we all are aware of his streaming hiatuses, which can only mean he's taking this seriously.
i doubt signing seagull was purely for his genji or his heropool, but moreso his value as a team player. envy has been known for their unique setups on first-point winning defenses (chips on sombra or harry on soldier, taimou on junkrat, etc) so having seagull with his flexibility and consistency, they could easily try out new comps and setups. this only strengthens envyus's ability to become an unpredictable team.
