Final 8 cities in Overwatch League

It has previously been stated that OWL would like to end up with 28 teams. Since there are currently 20 teams, that means there may be only eight more teams who will join the Overwatch League. Where do you think they should be?

I'll go first:

  1. Busan
  2. Sydney/Melbourne
  3. Rio de Janeiro/Sao Paolo/Bueno Aires
  4. Cologne/Frankfurt
  5. Moscow
  6. Amsterdam/Milan/Rome/Copenhagen/Stockholm
  7. Tapei/Bangkok/Tokyo/Singapore
  8. Any city in 6 that didn't get selected/Any city in 7 that didn't get selected/Madrid/Katowice/Istanbul/Medina/Beijing/Johannesburg

I kinda cheated with 8 but 28 simply isn't enough spots!

If they want to make it logistically reasonable I don't think Australia or South America getting only 1 team makes too much sense.

I would say their primary target should be getting few more EU teams for countries like: (I am assuming 4 divisions with 7 teams in each so trying to make some sense in my picks) So basically new teams 5 EU, 2 Asia and 1 NA. So it would be 7 EU, 14 NA, 7 Asia

  1. Germany (Cologne/Frankfurt probably would make a lot of sense, but I still think Berlin might be where they end up to)
  2. Nordic country (Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway or Sweden), but most realistic is probably Stockholm (Sweden) or Copenhagen (Denmark)
  3. Italy/Spain (Rome, Milan, Barcelona or Madrid)
  4. Amsterdam or Brussels or just something in The Netherlands/Belgium area
  5. Not sure, what city to name as 5th from EU, but Moscow, Italy/Spain (which didn't get team for 3rd) or Austria/Switzerland/Poland would be probably the best option. Moscow just seems not realistic with all the world politics currently.
  6. Busan would make sense just, because of how many Korean players there is in the league, but not sure of geography (Australia/Sydney would be spot on, but I don't see it realistic until I actually see it being announced)
  7. Bangkok/Singapore or something in Pacific region
  8. Basically any NA team that makes sense for splitting NA teams into 2 division of 7 teams (As far as I can see East Coast has more teams than West Coast, but I can't name a city based of geography, which would make sense) Team in Brazil/Argentina what so ever would be sweet, but it would have to be really more than 1 team to justify the travel....

Personally I think, if they want teams in South America they would need to get 2 teams there, but with Australia I don't think they really deserve more than 1 team, but I am not sure how much sense does it make logistically without knowing, where is nearest team in Asia/Pacific region. To make this happen though I think they need 32 teams in League.

I could think of a few in Europe that deserve a spot based on history of e-sports but it's Europe after all and it doesn't seem like Blizzard like us, in my opinion it will most likely be 4 more NA teams, 2 China and 2 Korean and no doubt Asian players will make up about 95% of those 8 teams.

If the OWL ends up full without Germany and Sweden getting a spot it will be a disgrace, at least Germany anyway.

Don't agree with SA getting a spot, call me ignorant but SA as a whole have provided very little to e-sports and you struggle to think of too many big events taking place in SA and there must be a reason for it.

I find it hard to justify all the flying from NA to Europe (when home games), if Europe has only 2 teams. Of course, if American investor wants to get a city in NA they will not buy slot for Europe.

I do agree with South America though with different reasons though. Can you imagine flying to Brazil just for one game and then fly back to NA? It doesn't make sense.

Well that's the case even for NA, flying from one side of the US to the other for one game? I mean the whole concept is a bit shit to be fair, what would've worked well was having a whole fixture list at each cities home that way it's essentially a tour where the OWL will be all over the world which would surely ramp up the popularity of it.

Honestly though I have zero idea how the home and away games work but if it ends up being like "real" sports then it's overkill.

Hmm in all the lists I see a lack of Chinese spots, if it goes like it did this last round I'd say at least one or 2 more slots will be again assigned to a Chinese city.

I hope not tbh, but if money is the reason why we only got 2 EU cities in 2 seasons and no SA or AU ones, I don't see it changing drastically coming Season 3, when the slots would probably be also more expensive?

Unless of course some Chinese mogul decides to buy a slot in a different region.

Well I highly doubt they would do home-away-home-away etc., but it would be more like East Coast teams go to West Coast for playing all of those teams for next few weeks. Just like, if they fly to Europe they would play vs all European teams not just one.

I think you could look at how NHL (or some other American sports) works with road-game tour being something like 3-7 games and similar with home games in a row.
