Did you see IEM was in Sydney last year, and is coming again this year? That's kinda unrelated I guess since our CS team didn't do too great, but we have a few in Dota 2 and others! good to see people still underestimating Aus in gaming in 2018. fbm we're p small but there are some talented people :(

Next thing you know people will be removed from their orgs from using such profanity as "wtf" and "bs". What a lame sequence of events.

despite he plays ranked almost exclusively as zarya his hero pool is actually pretty good. Lush has played support in the past and he slots onto the role well (arguably better than dps imo).

Also you're tunnel visioning the lack of versatility, "questioned their eagerness to improve" - this was a big one.

There was a bit more stuff that Sideshow cut out that highlights this. Part of my response involved "The rest of the team also felt that they weren't super keen to improve, and didn't bring very positive attitudes to the team atmosphere when playing."

There aren't really any 'professional' teams in Overwatch in Australia (yet?), but there are some teams which are sponsored, presumably for not much more apart from lan support & peripherals at this point in time. Don't be afraid to sign up - playing against better opponents is the best way to improve

My thoughts - based on watching some games (Haven't played any comp yet) and just some general thinking.

  1. I think you generally use more tank(s) on offence for more meat to take ground 'easier'. Reinhardt is almost staple because you just provide a wall for your team and just slowly take ground, + his huge cc ult sets up a lot of things. (Note: not 'always' the case, just a somewhat general guideline).

  2. Seems pretty mixed depending on what tourneys we've been watching. Genji, McCree, reaper probably get the most play, splash a bit of soldier and to a lesser extent pharah in there.

  3. Lucio is in a really strong place rn. I don't think I see him never being used without some changes. AoE heals that can be huge on demand (12 sec cd mind u), swaps to speed boost for a quick push

  4. Lucio has the aoe heals covered, while zen dishes out long range damage, debuffs someone annoying on their team to keep track of them/swaps to priority heroes (doubt this happens too often - not required really) and has a flanker or frontline with a permanent heal. Mercy I can see using if you have a much more static defence, perhaps with a widow or a pharah spamming (could be useful for spamming down shields a bit easier with a dmg boost, but zen's kit is just too good imo), but I can't see those two dps being used too much AT THE MOMENT.

Symmetra I see working less and less the further u get pushed back to ur base - she's pretty useless on offence IMO because you start spawning closer and closer to the point anywho. Teleporter loses value on defence the further you get pushed back, plus her weapons are p rubbish in fights and the shield isn't that great. Better off with another anything almost

  1. See point 1. Winston sees a lot of play due to high mobility, big aoe shield and his ult causes huge disruption and essentially a 2nd life. Zarya is played a fair bit here and there I think (maybe not too much atm), but she's more an "offtank"+ utility than tank

  2. 2x winstons, 2x reapers, 2x lucios are pretty common atm. Defence and offence - lots of in your face fighting.

  3. I think this is too situational to call (at least for me). I think for offence they can generally just keep pushing without ults to force enemy ults and don't really get punished for it.

We all have some ideas. What do you think needs to be added to the game (EXCLUDING CLASS BALANCE ETC) that is either 'required' or huge QOL?

Examples I can think of:

  1. Weapon model toggle
  2. Ability to turn off/move hud elements (including KILL STREAK in the middle of your screen)
  3. Better sensitivity settings

Give her a bit more hp or something. Genji practically plays the same (but is better), and has 200 hp!

posted about 8 years ago

Yeah turrets were practically players with spinbot - just insta lock on. DVA change is kinda neat, bastion changes I like

Maybe not all times. Just when they're in vision and for a short duration after?

posted about 8 years ago

Should they? Should they not?

I personally think they should, or rather, at least implement a setting for competitive/custom games where you can disable them from showing up. Actually allows some surprise 'pocket strats", and perhaps encourages aggressive scouting by someone on your team, especially if you are the defenders. Some people would say "don't implement cheese wtf are you doing" but I think, if anything, it adds another layer to 'mindgames'

Pretty hard to judge since not many scrims are streamed and there's only been 1 tourney (for each region) since new beta

To take a stab at a few:

Of course. I was just going at face value, though.

I agree he definitely needs something to do while his shield is down, because you generally leap in -> shield. If some dudes focus you in shield/shield goes down fast and your leap isn't up you better pepper ur angus.

posted about 8 years ago

I see where you're coming from and can somewhat agree, however I'm definitely trying to keep this as a PUB + comp mindset - covering both bases. I think the only times that you can consistently kill a Zenyatta is when you catch him out. If they are pretty aware/cautious and make sure they're with someone that can protect them (lets say a Zarya for e.g.) then it's gonna be a nightmare. The other option is to snipe em.

I honestly think if you nerf the max range a little bit on discord, give it a duration, POTENTIALLY reduce the dmg bonus ZENYATTA gets vs the discord target, then he won't be such a pest. Orb of Discord is a cool idea and neat ability, but the way it is implemented right now is just horrible imo - it's like a fucking parasite in Starcraft on one of your units which you can't do anything about unless you're Tracer.

For what DVA does and the role(s) she can fill I still think she's a little bit too good. Just comparing her to say, Winston for example (note - on face value):

Higher dps weapons (By a mile)
Reversed hp/armor with winston (100 hp + 400 armor vs 400 hp 100 armor)
Shorter cd mobility skill (5sec vs 8sec?)
6 sec CD that negates projectiles (vs a shield that you plonk down)
Very high damage potential ultimate (vs one that just slaps people around)
"Two lives". Winston somewhat has this covered if he gets low and ults for maximum efficiency in a teamfight.

I understand they may not necessarily fill the same "role" in game, and these abilities don't necessarily line up, and one hero may perform better on some maps than the other, but even better is you can almost even use D.VA as an assassin kinda hero ala Tracer. Granted, she's a bigger target so she'd be easier to hit, but she can just zip away and protect herself anyway and win (EDIT:) a lot of 1v1s vs most heroes if you can aim (which is p easy to do with her weps). I say maybe if you just very slightly change her boost to be 1-2 sec longer cd then she'd fall into line much better.

Gonna go down the list and cover stuff I find important in the patch notes, and also address stuff that I feel that maybe should have been addressed in the patch.

  • All healing effects now work on shields. This is pretty good for Zenyatta, small buff to Symettra’s usefulness, AND, most importantly, buffs the crap out of Zarya. I can see her being picked more and more, now.
  • Display changes to make enemy effects more noticeable is nice. You may have seen a Mei ice block at long range before and at a glance wasn’t 100% sure it was an enemy or teammate - now you know.
  • Muzzle flash down for a lot of weapons is definitely welcome. Soldier 76 was especially nightmarish to play in the past.
  • Ultimate changes are pretty cool. I would still prefer if you lost a bit of your charge when you died. I understand the competitive game mode isn’t set in stone for how it’s going to be played, and people haven’t figured it out, but it’d be annoying if it devolves into teams playing passive waiting for ults ala tf2 waiting for uber.
  • Bastion changes are interesting. Can’t really sneak behind him too easily anymore, and you can’t do the good ol fly at him as D.va with def matrix on to kill him super quickly. Definitely needs to be focused down quickly - Charged widowmaker + a few rockets at the same time should do the trick. Treat him like a heavy in TF2!
  • D.va changes weren’t enough IMO. Her defensive/offensive prowess wasn’t just strong for her def matrix, it was her mobility. Maybe nerf the boost by tuning its cd or duration.
  • Mercy changes are BIG. Actually has to be in harms way to be able to get a proper res off. Will probably need a zarya shield or monkey to protect her when ressing in some situations for sure. Good positioning even more important.
  • Pharah ‘nerf’ made me a little sad. A bit harder to max the usage of your boost when climbing over some areas to go for a sneaky flank, but I can understand the reasoning when you had people hanging out on Hollywood last cap.
  • Reinhardt nerfs very very good, plus the minor ‘buffs’ to compensate end up going alright for the hero. His damage definitely was pretty damn ridiculous. I think the stun duration needs to turn down a little bit tho. maybe by 10-15%? thereabouts.
  • Not sure exactly about the Roadhog interaction. I think you can still either rewind/ghost form this at the end (unless the roadhog has good ping maybe). Need someone else to confirm
  • Soldier 76 bit too strong now, imo. Great mobility, even better dps, and his long range is still good. You can just bink people across the map with your first 5(?) accurate bullets, stop shooting for a sec, rinse and repeat. Maybe make it more like 3 shots, or increase the ‘cooldown’ between 100% accurate and not 100%? Can see him becoming almost staple in comp play.
  • Symmetra change is p neat. Some people in pub were able to have a huge teleporter uptime which would have been a menace.
  • Torbjorn changes are quite big. He’s essentially a mini sentry engineer now, with a better weapon, PLUS he drops armor for his team which is very useful. Maybe tune down the range on the turrets, though, just slightly!
  • Zenyatta. Surprised this hero didn’t get tuned. I understand he’s super damn squishy and his mobility sucks ass, but OoD is just too damn strong. You can cast it almost halfway across the map and just keep tabs on one dude too long. Pharah giving your team problems? What about a Genji? Not a problem. You now have permanent wallhack on that guy, and you can either kill him yourself or just tell your team where they are/track them yourselves. Reduce the max range cast and/or give it a duration. I don't feel you disadvantage your team that much, if at all, if you aren't swapping it to dudes you wanna focus in fights.
  • Interface changes they made are pretty neat. Finally a kill feed - woohoo! Scoreboard statistics are nice, too. However, I feel they need to really rework the whole overlay of the scoreboard. Just make it like TF2’s one tbh!
  • A lot better visual indicators now, especially for something like Mei’s ult. Very useful.
  • New game mode is pretty fun. I think the potential duration for the rounds is too short, though. I understand it’s bo3, but even a max duration game with all 3 games being played (EDIT:) probably isn’t long enough. Not sure how they can tweak this. The map is pretty fun, too.
  • Haven’t played the new CP map yet. I keep getting it then getting popped into another game/map.

Thanks for reading. Let me know what you think of the patch, whether you disagree/agree with any points I made!

EDIT: minor vocab change
EDIT2: I probably didn't touch enough on other heroes (like widowmaker, probably), but I might do a better write-up a few weeks into the beta. This is just after a few hours of playing the new patch
EDIT3: More vocab changes
