To be fair Season 3 was meant to be break or make it year for OWL, but with recent events it's really hard to expect this year to be it, but next year with OW2 is really last chance. Sure would expect higher viewership numbers than current 40-50k, but chat is filled with kids spamming "Get back to Twitch" and all that non-sense so, if it's mostly those people gone... I'm happy, but someone else might not be happy :)

Hope so. I feel like it was very much only option Blizzard (who ever actually is involved making these decisions) can do as they are marketing their games to kids and teens so they can't take risks to be involved in things like this even, if actions these players ever did would cause them nothing in public court.

Blizzard would not get Disney deal (again), if they had player like this in their broadcasts.

I don't think we are provided all the information to protect privacy of those involved (same with previous DK case). Like, if there is minors (what ever happens to age of consent in given state, where this has happened) involved don't expect to get much information. California seems to be 18 though.

Pretty much every major sports league tried to keep going as long as possible (American or European Leagues), but almost all of them shutdown on same week. Some leagues/countries took it seriously from the beginning (having all those safety measures etc. for hygiene), but none probably thought it would affect like it have.

It's just something you can't really prepare for. It's not like everyone even gets to "experience" some kind of serious virus pandemic in their lives.

As silly as it sounds, but it was either Aliens attacking or something like this, what would make world to work together for greater good.

posted about 4 years ago

Well they said that a month ago, when situation was different than it currently is in many countries. Even, if things get better by June nobody would take a risk and host any big event in next few weeks or even months unless there's some miracle vaccine by then, which is also unlikely.

But Playoffs or Grand Finals are at end of August or September so it's really hard to predict how things go for next 4 months. Maybe teams can gather in some location to play those games, but don't think we see event with crowd this year.

posted about 4 years ago

If true obviously not acceptable actions, but I only wonder why these kind of things are not brought up, when he was signed to OWL team, but instead of about 4-6 months later in the middle of a season? Well at least this specific case she is telling is about 6 months old not that I know, what other stupid stuff Mouffin has been doing after that.

On second note.. how come these people haven't learned anything from Season 1 OWL... and that one player whose name shall not be mentioned?....

So next weekend bedroom casting?

posted about 4 years ago

Hopefully at least (presumably East Coast group of teams) some games will be played around same times than previous weeks had games. Personally I would want to see West Coast teams playing too, but I can understand timezone differences being bummer to fit them perfectly.

Would be still nice to get some player interactions (post game interviews or something like that), but I can kind of understand it might not be possible for every game.

posted about 4 years ago

Doubt we get to see many, if any Homestands this year. Guess there's small chance for July/August Homestands + Playoffs/Grand Finals. Situation in China (according numbers) is getting better and slowly it's getting back to normal, but it took somewhat 2 months (I don't remember exact dates, when they started to do something about it, but they kind of have it under control now according numbers/information we are being provided) to "stop" mass spreading, but it's far from over yet.

Although at this point I don't even care, if it's totally online or teams at LAN without crowd.

posted about 4 years ago

Well that's the problem with LAN format as travelling is not an option for some teams. It's not the most important thing to solve for now though.

posted about 4 years ago

True. Not sure, if LAN without crowd is possibility for all games though given, where some teams are currently located. Sure Chengdu vs NYXL (if both playing from their home cities) wouldn't be fair match up with pings, but NYXL vs Philly should be pretty much okay in that sense for pings.

As far as I know: teams are located like this for now:
China = Chengdu
Korea = Hangzhou, Guangzhou, Shanghai
NA = All of the rest?, but a lot of them are still spread around between east and west.

You were right it wasn't pretty. (2-0 currently :P)

Will have to see couple weeks before I can say do I really like Hero Pools in OWL. Maybe it's teams playing this weekend or meta of this weekend so far not getting to me or I am just tired, but guess I am fine with this, if we end up seeing more variation in comps every week even, if some weeks comps might be boring.

Looking that current live viewers isn't really telling you much about viewership, when some people use MLG. Although I would like to see some team based viewership data around half way of the season. Nobody will be watching every game, when we finally start to have 2 locations for games.

I am not even sure how to rate Paris anymore. Think I originally placed them (in my own special mind) somewhere around 12-13th, but that feels low for them now.

posted about 4 years ago

When not every team looks the same there's a chance some teams are actually interesting :)

posted about 4 years ago

Unfortunate thing, but this whole corona-virus situation in certain countries is just showing that even, if 99 people out of 100 people go along with basic hygiene steps that 1 person who doesn't can just screw things up for everyone else. which is even more unfortunate.

Wonder how many of the teams currently in Korea are able to get back to States? All US based teams surely, but are Seoul + 3 Chinese teams stuck in Korea and, what about Chengdu? I don't know, when they would have been playing first time in US based Homestand so no idea, when they could even come to country? Have a feeling that we might end up not having any Asia teams playing this year at this speed.

posted about 4 years ago

I do agree that it's a bit silly with 4 out of 7 maps being Control, but kind of understand why we are not having Hybrid/Escort 2nd time in regular season match. Can't make games last forever after all. It's not that we have 2 draws that often.

Control normally won't last even 10 minutes, if you don't count all the countdowns.

posted about 4 years ago

Toronto did look decent/good team for maps 2-5, but I wouldn't dare to rate them higher than somewhere lower parts of Play-in spots (10th-12th) until they play couple more games.

Well compare Season 2 Philly vs Season 3 Philly and it's very clear Season 3 Philly is much more team cohesive (what ever will be the reasons for that).

I think the schedule will give us some surprises eventually as some teams will have few weeks break before a match, where as their opponent have been playing for couple weekends in a row (possibly 2 games each weekend too). Not sure though, if that was the case for this game.

posted about 4 years ago

Didn't find those games there anymore earlier. Well at least not in their old form, maybe they are still somewhere there, but well will have to see, what games will be played, if any extras at Homestand.

posted about 4 years ago

Is there a list of cancelled Chinese Homestand games somewhere as I was just wondering, which games are possibly played at Seoul Homestand? As they are not been shown anymore after cancellation.

I mean can easily rule out teams, which are already playing both days, but don't remember match-ups from cancelled weeks to think, which games could be possible to happen.

I want to say Houston wins since Florida is still probably pretty bad (or are they..?), but to be fair I don't think Houston or Florida are that much of a different for their power rankings level.

I want to hope Houston is better than Florida, but I don't know how much I want to believe in all these talks I see around the interwebz...

That's the dream for Soe / Custa / Reinforce / + visiting analyst to make a draw for bans live after Sunday's games at post-game Watchpoint.

It would also maybe make more people tune into post-game show weekly basis.

posted about 4 years ago

Well OGE did play only one map too so making assumptions to either way is kinda pointless.

Sure I did expect OGE to be their MT player for most of the season, but maybe some teams are going more for players in certain roles splitting the load to avoid burnout. Still hope there's more than few teams, which uses subs for set plays for some maps.

I'm more positive about Gladiators after this match than I was after their roster was announced. (Did rate them somewhere around 8-10th, but I could see them competing for Top-6 spot, if they can keep up this kind of performance)

posted about 4 years ago

Likely 3-0 stomp in less than an hour, but Dallas does look "decent" even as ranked somewhere between 16-20th.

posted about 4 years ago

Valiant actually looking pretty decent.

To be fair all teams from Day 1 did look like there's hope for each one of them. Valiant definitely not 19th anymore in my head. Hard to make too big assumptions based on 1 match though.

posted about 4 years ago

This match is actually very bonkers

posted about 4 years ago

At least it's actually possible to have context for all those DMG/Healing Done etc., but I have already forgotten 90% of the matches for past 2 years to understand a single thing from these stats so I have to wait for new stats of games that I will watch this year to make any use of it.

posted about 4 years ago

Well it's still listed as Beta, but at least for now we do have access to the data for each game. It still needs some work on that part though to make it look "pretty" and smooth.

I can imagine it's pretty hard to make a simple stat page for Overwatch though, if there would be only shown like 5 stats as every hero/role has different stats to look at.

  1. SF Shock
    • Doesn't need explaining
  2. Atlanta Reign
    • Either Reign or XL tops Atlantic. Maybe they keep dominating NYXL also this year, which matchup will decide 2nd place
  3. NYXL
    • Expecting XL playing the long game and losing more games during regular season and putting all eggs in Playoffs
  4. Philadelphia Fusion
    • I wanted to put them 5th, but couldn't reason enough for any of the following teams being 4th. Also, if 5-7 Atlantic teams are dumpster tier Fusion has to be pretty high in the rankings, if they are my 3rd best Atlantic
  5. Guangzhou Charge
    • Well I made my choice, but they will probably take slight backlash with all those cancelled Homestands (waiting for info how those games will be played) and place slightly worse than 5th.
  6. Seoul Dynasty
    • This team never delivered, what was expected and I don't think they will either this year..
  7. Shanghai Dragons
    • Probably small dropout in standings, because of all the things currently happening in China
  8. Vancouver Titans
    • Fissure will be taking his talents to South Beach by the end of the season
  9. LA Gladiators
    • Unsure of their DPS lineup being consistent
  10. Hangzhou Spark
    • I don't even know, what did they do during off-season
  11. Chengdu Hunters
    • I would want to place them lower mostly, because of this whole Corona-virus situation, but since there's no info how those games will be played I don't know how much it will eventually affect team mentally.
  12. Houston Outlaws
    • Have to say Jecse bumped them up a little bit. Would be placing them around 15th otherwise
  13. Paris Eternal
    • Maybe I am overrating them, but Paris crowd might give them a boost couple times, which might also motivate them for few more weeks
  14. Toronto Defiant
    • Not really sure.. Hero Pools might help them, if it doesn't affect too much for, what heroes Beast must play
  15. Washington Justice
    • Corey can't win every game alone
  16. Dallas Fuel
    • Just getting dumpstered by stronger Pacific teams even, if they would win couple more Atlantic teams I placed ahead of them
  17. London Spitfire
    • Not expecting 12 young Koreans to handle all the travelling across the pond(Atlantic Ocean) too well.
  18. Florida Mayhem
    • Expect nothing and still get disappointed.. Mayhem 3.0 or 4.0 incoming
  19. LA Valiant
    • I just can't reason myself putting them anywhere else even there's some OWL talent and players hyping them up, when I don't have any intel...
  20. Boston Uprising
    • Where else?

Nothing wrong with the Bench though. Well as long management informs players that they are bench players, when they are signing them.

Maybe Crimzo plays some matches or maps once in a while, but personally I would want to see teams use their bench and not just go with their starting-6 for whole season. Of course it might even happen without bigger patch changes now, if certain heroes are banned.

posted about 4 years ago

That's, what it should be with how many heroes would be banned, but 7supports lineup isn't large enough to ban 2. With Overwatch 2 coming and more new heroes being added it's more suitable to do it there. Weirdly enough I'm almost "fine" with having 2 tanks banned even there's only 8, but would still prefer to have more than 10 heroes in each category before banning 2.

posted about 4 years ago

Well we will see Puckett at least in some form at some Homestands.

Wonder though how soon they will officially announce whole talent lineup... Would assume most of the people who haven't announce their departure are returning in a form or another.

posted about 4 years ago

It would not really be fair ban system, if one team can only ban 1tank and 1dps, where as other team bans 1dps and 1support. Adding ban phase into every OWL map isn't really needed and teams choosing a week in advance, which hero they want to ban for each map sounds not very interesting. It's also probably easier for broadcast talent to talk about matches, if they won't have to explain every 15minutes, which heroes are banned for this and this map.

It could be fair, if both teams gets to ban 1tank, 1-2dps and 1support, but I don't think we are there yet with amount of heroes for tank/support that 2 from each category could be banned. Someday probably, when there's 15 tanks and 15 supports.

I don't really know do I like whole system for OWL yet. Will have to watch couple weeks or months how much different variations will happen.

posted about 4 years ago

I don't think a team has schedule, where they would play every 2nd week, which would basically make it possible for same hero being banned every single game for them. But to be fair teams can't just bank up for having Dva in every single tactic they play, which is probably a good thing.

This HeroPool thing will absolutely need some adjustment later on, maybe during the season, but there's some idea in it, when we are actually at higher number of heroes 40, 50... etc. It's okay to experiment now than figure it out now than, when there's multiple heroes, which can fill into same role.

posted about 4 years ago

And how many players in each team have overlapping hero pools?

posted about 4 years ago

So are you calling Carpe OTP or why are you using him as example? Because in my mind Carpe can easily play about 5 heroes at very high level.

Well, if we compare Tank/Support vs DPS: Most Tank/Support players would only need to even have a clue about how to play 4-5 heroes at very high level. Not every MT or OT can play all 4 of their role heroes at highest level though. Normally it's like 2 or 3, but to be fair Tanks being player won't normally change that much during a map. I am not totally sure of supports as of lately you see both Flex or Main Support players playing "off-role" hero, if that's where meta is at the moment.

And with DPS there is 16 heroes with average it's 4 heroes per player (if we expect 4 DPS players per team, but some teams have 3 or 5) and to be fair quite a few of those heroes have somehow similar mechanics so, if player really can't learn to play 5 DPS heroes I don't really know, what can they bring into a team. Honestly I simply can't see Chipsa playing Doomfist 100% of the time, if he even gets to play at all.

posted about 4 years ago

To be fair, if player is one dimensional (plays like 2-3 heroes) with his hero pool should he even be in OWL?

posted about 4 years ago

Well, if only Chengdu/Ameng plays Ball does that even make that high pickrate for Ball? Might even depend how many games there will be played at each Homestand, if only 2 games (x2Homestands) per day Chengdu might suffer, but with 4 games (x2Homestands) per day.Ball might end up being not that high pickrate.

By 1-trick I meant mostly all those teams, which have like just 1 Main Tank, but is that guy even good enough to play all presumable heroes he is meant to be playing (Rein, Orisa, Winston and Ball) ? OWL 1-trick and old-ladder Mercy 1-trick is not really same definition, but you should understand what I mean.

Well, if certain dps heroes (Sombra, McCree etc) gets banned maybe Ball gets more playtime, but will have to see, which ones even gets banned at start.

posted about 4 years ago

I wonder how many surprising results we end up getting, because X hero is banned and X team can't win a game while that happens. Also wonder, what's the % of hero must be played until it can be included in ban draw.

It would be also hilarious, if some teams would play the long game and "throw" (by trying to play as much as possible heroes that they want to get banned for next week) week 6 as they know they would lose the game anyways and just wishing that by playing certain heroes they would reach the % to get them banned for next week vs their next opponent.

posted about 4 years ago

I think it's better with Blizzard (basically it's OWL teams who are banning it by playing certain heroes) to decide bans as otherwise we would be stuck in "ban phase" for too long. It's probably more entertaining to watch OWL than play on ladder though.

I wonder does this change affect into Power Rankings. Just imagine all those teams with single Tank or Support in given position and they are basically 1-trick for OWL and that hero gets banned (as everyone will play it) often.

posted about 4 years ago

Shame for Charge that they likely won't be able to host games 5 times (or even once), if this epidemic won't get resolved in next few months.

posted about 4 years ago

In a way it's good that past behavior has consequences (at least some future players might learn a thing or two about stuff like this), but in a way I still do believe in second changes. I know it's not, what every person deserves, if their actions have been very very bad. I don't know this case well enough to say anything smart, but taken on screenshots it's kind of justified, what OWL/Valiant did.

I just don't really know, where I would draw a line between "one strike and you are out" vs "okay that was bad, but you can try again".

Well my point was more about that people (fans/viewers/journalists) will whine (people whine about everything nowadays) not that it's been primary target by OWL (or shouldn't be). Talent team should be people who are actually excited to be there and that's, what OWL seems to be doing for Season 3. I'm pretty happy with their choices for this season so far.

Soe was expected choice to be included in talent team and like you said she is likeable person. I wasn't trying to make a point about she being kept, because of diversity or anything like that. Was just comparing to traditional sports as there's a clear trend trying to include much more women in their broadcasts compared some years back.

Still have to wait and see, how much of the season is actually watchable with EU times though. Not expecting to see many China or NA West Homestands, if I want to sleep more than last 2 years :D

Clearly Blizzard is cutting cost in all the announcements and out-sourcing them to Sideshow and Custa.

Sure it's all fun and giggles for couple times, but maybe a bit too many times now.

posted about 4 years ago

I think there's a difference about knowing stuff about Overwatch and being passionated about Overwatch.

I think it have been proven past 2 years that majority of viewers don't give a damn about game analyzes. They are watching just for "meaningless" triple kills etc. even, if their team losses the map after that, because enemy team played smarter. For the record I would like to see some more deep analyze, but doesn't bother me too much. Most of the plays are pretty simple to figure out.

Also I believe there is some kind of demand to some kind of diversity in on-camera talent. Somewhat 20 years ago nobody really cared/noticed, if it was just 5 white guys talking about sports, but trend nowadays is to have more diverse staff in these kind of things. I just want to watch people who are having fun while talking about Overwatch - don't really care, what gender etc.-.

posted about 4 years ago

Decent choice. Wonder though, what kind of role desk actually have during each Homestand.

posted about 4 years ago

That's first reason why they do that, but they said on broadcast multiple times last year "How do you prepare for something, what for you can't practice as no one else plays that comp on same level?". If everyone just played same comp like Goats you already knew outcome before match started.

It won't make them Championship team, but fans will like them. We have to remember even London and Shock have won Titles so far neither of them are most popular teams in the League. Not that I know are these "popular" teams really making way much more money than semi-popular teams.

posted about 4 years ago

Think they said in some interview last year that it's 6-8 weeks per balance patch. Wouldn't be surprised, if it's about same schedule than with old Stage format so we still would be having "4 stages" played with different patch. Personally I would hope, if there's any bigger changes it would happen during mid-season tournament.

Personally I don't think Patch 1.44 added that huge changes compared, what Patch 1.43 changed, but suppose there's some delay or at least teams would have been informed in advance that this PTR patch will be played in 2-3 weeks.

It would be just pretty shitty move, if you played last Sunday and prepared for all kind of stuff for next Saturday, but on Thursday Patch hits with millions of changes, which you never heard before.
