ATL Academy made this announcement following a disappointing week in Contenders Trials in which the team lost their only match and failed to qualify for the second week of Contenders competition.
This will be the first time ATL Academy has not competed in Contenders since they first entered it in Contenders 2018 Season 3. Their time in Contenders was marked by success; they finished in the top two of each of the three full Contenders seasons they competed in and won one Contenders title. They also finished fourth in the 2019 Atlantic Showdown and second in the Contenders Gauntlet.
ATL Academy parted with two players shortly before this announcement. They dropped flex support Haku after he was associated with several controversies and DPS Perfact left to join T1.
While Perfact played little for ATL Academy prior to his departure, Haku was a starter. The team never announced a permanent replacement for him.
There are two academy teams competing in the next week of Contenders North America: Team Envy and the Montreal Rebellion. A third academy team, Uprising Academy, failed to make it back into Contenders this week from Contenders Trials.
