for now, we might see more depending prodably on how fast they can close a deal with blizzard but again blizzard is aiming to have 28 teams in owl so we have nearly half of all th teams that we will ever have in it (AGAIN more on it in my 2nd thread listed below article

posted about 7 years ago

well, they aimed for 12-16 teams for season 1 (and they even set a final number of spots in owl for 28 read the thread i posted) and i didnt expect more then minimum for season 1 so i set it at that but maybe i was too pesimistic, well see
edit: ok i got what you mean and edited my post accordingly

also did i beat you to posting

2 more teams in owl "link"

or the little article like what i tried to write? ;) and because i tried to write it fast it came out very mediocre

and now off to the other thread, keeping this thread with list of spots in owl turned out to be more work then i expected :/

Following earlier report by espn of optic obtaining Houston comes the news (also from espn) of the one more spot for the first owl season beeing Philadelphia now owned by Comcast Spectacor, the owner of the Philadelphia Flyers and sports branch of cable giant Comcast. According to sources blizzard is also pursuing Wesley Edens as an owner of chicago spot this would make 13 spots, one more then the minimum blizzard set for season 1 of overwatch league.

If these and earlier reportabout envyus byuing Austin-dallas spot become official we will know most of the teams for the first season of the overwatch league. It is set to start this year and take place in the newly open Blizzard Arena Los Angeles every Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.

We now know every city for the first season only few of them have a roster and there is only one with, although rumoured only, name "Shanghai Dragons", also some time ago cloud 9 asked on twitter for help in naming its spot. According to blizzards rules every Overwatch League team is required to create new geolocated brand/name.

here you can finde full list of spots and rosters: https://www.over.gg/5409/overwatch-league-teams
and here collected info about overwatch scene after owl starts: https://www.over.gg/5564/overwatch-esport-scene-after-overwatch-league#5

EDIT FUCK i forgot to post source :/ sorry http://www.espn.com/esports/story/_/id/20673359/blizzard-entertainment-locks-two-more-20-million-overwatch-league-spots

edit i read it and should fix it coz its written terribly but hey thats a forum and who cares

yea im creating thread about it

blizzard said they want to have eventually 28 teams (max they want) so its not giant league and i think theyll keep them all in one league (no separation between regions) so you picked a little bit too many citys ;)
here more about owl: https://www.over.gg/5564/overwatch-esport-scene-after-overwatch-league#1

ok ok im adding optic ;)
i will put them just like envyus, unconfirmed coz neither of these two got confirmed by blizz yet

esport IS this big, i watch cs go and every year fans fill arenas like lanxess arena (19 000) or spodek arena (11 500) just for referance Staples Center - 21 000
overwatch on the other hand isnt that big

edit: and what mate under me said

about size and comapring it to sydney owc qualifier
(copy from thread on this topic coz im too lazy to write it again)

according to this: https://www.star.com.au/sites/default/files/The%20Star%20Fact%20Sheet_Event%20Centre.pdf
depending on which level of star center was used for sydney qualifier it could fit from 200 to nearly 1000 viewers so it wa bigger then new blizzard arena

edit: i looked closer at diagrams and i think room A was used and if we asume "cabaret" style sitting it fits 344 sits but because room b is connected to room a that would bump the number of sits to 550 in cabaret style so overrall blizzard venue should be simillar in size, maybe a little bit smaller

i never thought q3 was realistic, they announced owl at 2016 bizzcon! but "this year" is still actual so i think they belive that theyll be able to start first season before the end of this year

blizzcon or more specificly owc finalls might actually be testing ground for owl maybe new spectating tools? (but i dont have high hopes for this)

posted about 7 years ago

i think the initial annoucment talked about q3 but dont quote me on that
but in all the latest news about owl its said "this year" so by this point only q4 is left

edit i found dot esport article and it confirmes that initialy owl was planned for q3 https://dotesports.com/overwatch/overwatch-league-reportedly-set-to-start-in-the-third-quarter-of-2017-9146
and one more article https://www.pcgamesn.com/overwatch/overwatch-league-start-date?amp
so i was right :P memory serves well

posted about 7 years ago

Yes i know owl is announced to start this year (hell we even know what format and where itll take place, which is in my 2nd thread) but blizzard still needs officialy 3 teams (envyus is not officiall) and after blizzcon there is realy not much time left before the end of a year
Also wasnt initial annoucnment talking about 3rd quoter of this year?

interesting interview

he talks a little about 12 man rosters and thats a very intersting (do you for examle make 2 full rosters for different maps?)

not really realated but i hope that thanks to american aproach of making everything into bussiness at last korean esport organization might follow Kevin Chous lead and start making some money instead of losing it all the time

my look into overwatch scene after owl starts - https://www.over.gg/5564/overwatch-esport-scene-after-overwatch-league#5

and closing words i agree with interviewer, ive been quietly watching viewership of apex contenders and some "smaller" tournaments and the scene is in really bad shape and if owl doesnt come relativly soon (before the end of this year or VERY early next year) it might be hard to make owl successfull

really bad time for players right now, specialy after leaving apex lw blue has no tournaments to play in

dont try to convince people on over.gg that seagull isnt THE GOD OF OVERWATCH
just look at earlier comment

He's been praised by a massive amount of pros, has an almost unparalleled understanding of the game, plus he's mechanically skilled on a massive amount of heroes. Not only he is an asset to any team for his pure skill, but also his marketability.

and i honestly looked for a proof of other pros praising him and i havent found any
last time i wrote seagull is not the best genji in the west i got downvoted to hell and people just kept writing how GODLY SEAGULLS EVERY HERO IS

conclussion i avoid seagulls topic on over.gg

edit get downvoted to hell for saying something negative about seagull on over.gg (same fate awaits me)

misfits 4:0
misfits too strong right now
gigantti 3:1
even though i would want go to win gigantti still looks better

thoorin was talking about locked roster (aka league format) and it shows he doesnt know how contenders went so far and from cs go, thoorin loves talking about things even if he has no idea what hes talking about (luckily lately he was not invited to nearly any tournament)

about locked rosters in future we will see what blizzard does

posted about 7 years ago

i just watched it and there is far more info about owl available then they seem to know about
also thoorin again talking about something he doesnt know about - you can change players in contenders team (at least this season) just look how many roster changes we had so far - at least do some research
here i combained all the available information: https://www.over.gg/5564/overwatch-esport-scene-after-overwatch-league

well just when i started writing this espn released article comapring lcs and owl:
http://www.espn.com/esports/story/_/id/20533963/north-american-league-legends-championship-series-franchising-blueprint-overwatch-league
really worth reading

posted about 7 years ago

It does terrible job at that also its less about spelling and more about composition and cohesion of what i wrote

posted about 7 years ago

im not even going to read this coz im gona get pissed at how bad at writing i am
at least i had something to do while waiting for todays games

posted about 7 years ago

Maybe not "after" but i decided to look into available info on overwatches esport scene as a whole, not only THE overwatch league (owl in short) that everyone is waiting once it starts.

Lets start by looking at official blizzard site for owl (link to the site), while on the first look it might seem like there is nothing interesting there except for information already reported but if we look closely we can finde something interesting, this picture tells us owl is still at the "announcment" stage yet the league is still set to start this year.

Now lets move to the trailer and again, alot of content but not much substans but we can again finde something interesting. Trailer mentiones that:

early next year, before season play commences the overwatch league will conduct a combine

and that prodably already happened (although it wasnt "early" this year) after owl commissioner sent an email survey to "a select group of top players" asking them, if they want to be included in the scouting report, which will be available to all Overwatch League team owners on 27 of june. (source)

Now i'll move to information in espn articles starting with the original announcement of the first 7 cities in owl to which link is here.
And we finally get some concrete information

The inaugural season is set to take place in Los Angeles to accommodate teams already stationed there. The regular season games are set to take place on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. The teams are allowed to run up to five amateur tournaments in their respective regions, such as the Online Division and Regional Contenders.

First we get information about the format and place of the first owl season but for me more important is information about the "amateur tournament". In my opinion this short sentence tell us more about the structure of overwatch esport scene then all the other information combined.

Overwatch league is going to be a top tier tournament with geolocated teams and top players from each region taking place once in a few months or maybe once a year. But most of the time we'll prodably be watching regional (aka amateur) events in which all the teams that are not in owl will also take part. A lot of these event we are prodably already familiar with such as APEX, Premier Series, Pacific Championship, South American Overwatch Circuit and more but we might also see other big companies such as esl and dreamhack.
I've left out contenders because it is blizzards tournament and from what we can see it will prodably be overwatches 2nd league and along with all the rest of tournamets outside owl a scouting ground for teams with a spot to create, or pick up the best team for the next owl season.

I'm not very familiar with League of legends as i've never even played this game but i still know something about the scene and from what i can see owl is going to be very simmilar to riots format. (or maybe im totaly wrong about lols esport scene format? pls tell me if im wrong)

In this article its mentioned that Blizzard told SportsBusiness Journal that they eventually hope to sell 28 permanent franchises that might seem like not much but if they'll be all in one league (no separated eu, na, asia) it is actually quite a lot.

With the goal of 12 for the first season (technicly 12-16 but 16 doesnt seem likely) and 9 officaly anounced and 10th spot rumoured as dallas by team envyus we have only 2 more to go.

Now moving to the latest announcement that Overwatch League teams are required to create new geolocated brands (link here), there is really not much to add to this, teams we will see in the first season of owl will be the same teams as for the last season.

All this is my interpretation of available information, if i missed some thing let me know

i would be carefull with "giant league" even 16 teams league is small (im gona make thread to look into and disscus how ow scenewill look like when owl starts)

its gona be (for now at least) one league, first season will take place in la

eunited lately looks very shaky and without owl spot i would honestly not be suprised if organization droped them (i know eunited best eu team and so on BUT they dont and prodably wont have a spot in owl so it would be better for players to look for place in other organizations)

NetEase has team cc and they got this team to learn more about scene well see what team theyll pick
