Early today Rhinos Gaming Wings announced their disbandment after a disappointing 0-3 run in APEX Season 3. Wings had been competing in Group D alongside BK Stars, EnVyUs and Meta Athena, but only managed to win one map out of a potential nine. In the announcement on Facebook it was also revealed that the team considered disbanding over a month ago before their first game against BK Stars.
Their road to APEX was filled with highs and lows. Despite tying with X6-Gaming for 1st place in Challengers Season 3 the Wings roster would be gutted just before SuperWeek. Half the team was swapped out, with envy and Umtae being brought in from the failing Titans sister team. The amalgam squad would scrape through SuperWeek in 5th-6th - placings that wouldn't even have earned qualification in previous seasons that had featured four foreign teams.
The news comes at a time when Korean players and teams are seriously reconsidering their options with the Overwatch League slowly creeping in to focus. Whilst the elite Korean teams have been consolidating power and adding depth to their 8 man rosters, the horizons of Korean pros have been expanding with a recent influx of offers from North American teams.
At the time of disbanding the Rhinos Gaming Wings roster was:
- Lee "envy" Kang-jae (이강재) (DPS)
- Kim "oxo" Gyoon-tae (김균태) (DPS)
- Kim "Fury" Joon-ho (김준호) (Flex)
- Kim "Mango" Tae-goo (김태구) (Support)
- Kim "Umtae" Gyoon-tae (김균태) (Tank)
- Jeon "Agape" Hyeon-seok (전현석) (Support)
- Kim "Tyrant" Gyoon-tae (김균태) (DPS)
- Ahn "Amy" Min-yeong (안민영) (Support)
